Forest Chi For Schools and Colleges

Forest Chi is easy to learn, fun and accessible to all, whatever level of fitness and ability in PE.
Practicing in the open air surrounded by nature activates the senses and builds a feeling of wellbeing.
Nature awareness activities are an integral part of Forest Chi.
There are also partner exercises, which encourage an understanding of relationship.
(Forest Chi can work in indoor settings too).
‘Cognitive outcomes are improved for children regularly exposed to activity in natural places.’ Obrien et al, 2016
For Children in KS 2 + 3
As a form of exercise, Forest Chi fits into the PE curriculum. It improves balance and coordination and builds a natural level of fitness. It is accessible to all and can be adapted for people with physical disabilities.
There are links with the science curriculum through nature awareness, use of the senses and environmental teachings, for example in looking at the way trees grow, the way animals move or the effects of gravity on our bodies.  Partner work gives students the chance to explore the way they interact with their peers and therefore has relevance to PSHE friendships and relationships.

For Older Students
Forest Chi offers valuable tools in managing the pressures of studying and taking exams.
It is a mindful practice that can help young people (and teachers) release stress and find a sense of calm focus.
Students spend a lot of time sitting to study. After time, this leads to reduced circulation, tiredness and a build up of tension throughout the body. The movements of Forest Chi offer a way to relieve tensions and restore vitality.

Where, How and What?
If you have a natural area in your school grounds or an area close by that you can use we can come to you and run forest chi sessions with you and your classes. Alternatively, you can visit us at one of our sites. We can put together tailor made sessions to suit your needs. We also offer one off introductory sessions.
Sessions usually take place outdoors but it is always possible to adapt to an indoor setting if necessary.

Why?
Research shows that outdoor exercise benefits young people.

‘We have shown clearly and in a variety of contexts that physical activity in the presence of nature improves health and well-being. We have found no groups who have not benefitted: all ages, genders, ethnicities and social classes respond positively to green exercise.’ Jules Pretty, University of Essex, 2016

‘We have shown that deliberate therapeutic use of natural environments has short and long term positive effects on groups under mental stress (including at risk children and youth…)’ Jules Pretty, University of Essex, 2016
